A journalist was arrested in Sunamganj early Tuesday on charge of posting a status on a social media against the local lawmaker.

The arrested was Mahtab Uddin Talukder, 45, Sunamganj district correspondent of private television channel SA TV and editor of regional newspaper Dainik Haoranchaler Kotha, police said.

Sunamganj police assistant superintendent Sujan Chandra Sarker confirmed the arrest.

He said that Mahtab posted a status on his Facebook page on Monday mentioning that Sunamganj-1 constituency lawmaker Moazzem Hossain Ratan has been arrested by Anti-Corruption Commission, though the news was not true.

Following the Facebook comment, a local Awami League leader Benuar Hossain Khan filed a case under the Digital Security Act with Dharmapasha police on Monday night against Mahtab.

Police arrested him at around 2:00am on Tuesday from his residence of Balakapara in the district town, the police officer said.

Dharmapasha police officer-in-charge Delwar Hossain said that the arrested was produced in a district judicial magistrate court in the afternoon and the court ordered sending him to jail.
